Google Acquires Zenter, Onlide SlideShow Builder

Google today made the acquisition announcement of Zenter, a company that provides software for creating online slide presentations. This acquisition is to help complete their upcoming Powerpoint/presentation application. The price wasn’t disclosed.

Google has been rumored to be creating an online Powerpoint clone since February. In April the rumors were confirmed by Eric Schmidt and then on the Google blog. As with the other applications in Google Docs & Spreadsheets, most of the technology seems to be imported. Google previously acquired Tonic Systems for their presentation technology.

Zenter was focusing on the front end of the application, as well as community/sharing features. It complements Tonic, which focused on the back end technology for converting powerpoint presentations into Java objects. Zenter takes a more social look at slide shows, letting users share their projects and incorporate content directly from the web, including Google Images.

Importing a PowerPoint to Moodle

As a Moodle user, I am really impressed by its powerful features. I can even upload a PowerPoint presentation as one lesson for learning and teaching.
Actually, we have at least two options to import a PowerPoint to Moodle.

Option1. Import a PowerPoint as webpage
Moodle has native feature to capture text and graphics from a series of PowerPoint presentation slides and insert them into the content area of a series of branch tables, as text and images.

You can follow these steps to import now.
1.Save a PowerPoint as html webpage
Open a PowerPoint Presentation
Go to File-> Save As
Select Web Page from the drop-down of Save As Type
Click Save
2.Zip the folder
Browse to the folder created by Saving As Web Page
Zip only the folder but not the html file with a zipping program
3.Import to Moodle
Run a Moodle course in Edit mode
Add an Activity-> Add a Lesson ,name a lesson and set settings
Select Import PowerPoint in the drop-down list
Browse to the Zip file on the local disk and click to upload
Notes:
1.Complicated presentations with animations, transitions and graphic effects can not be imported correctly. Text presentations with simple graphic images works best.
2.This feature does not work with PowerPoint 2003 and onward.
If you want to import only presentations created by PowerPoint 2003, you need to modify the settings of Moodle.
Go to Moodle\mod\lesson\importppt.php

With these modifications, you can not upload presentations created by other versions of PowerPoint.

When you choose File->Package for CD, you will see a dialog box.

This dialog gives you the option to Copy to a Folder on your hard drive, or to Copy directly to CD. As you see, linked files and the PowerPoint Viewer are included by default, regardless of which copy option you choose.

Choose "Add Files" if you have other files or presentations you want to include in the CD and they're not already linked to your presentation.

Even if you have inserted audio to the presentation, it will also included in the CD.

PowerPoint can only recognize video in AVI, MPEG, MWV formats and
Any movie cannot be EMBED in PowerPoint but linked to it.
Embed means that PowerPoint just ask the system to play the video from your local drive and the video is not included in the PowerPoint presentation.

Insert audio to PowerPoint

The big picture of inserting audio to PowerPoint presentations:
Usually, audio in WAV format will be embedded in PowerPoint while audio in MP3 or other file formats will be linked to PowerPoint. And more, sound files larger than 100 KB (i.e. anything but a short sound effect) will be linked to your presentation rather than embedded in it.

What is the difference between Linked and Embedded? Embedded means that when you move the PPT on your computer or e-mail it, audio will be moved together. When audio is linked, it will be lost if you move the PPT or e-mail it.

Sound files larger than 100 KB (i.e. anything but a short sound effect) will be linked to your presentation rather than embedded in it. This means that you need to copy your original media files whenever you burn the presentation to CD or even move it to a different folder on your own computer. To avoid problems, I highly recommend copying your chosen media file(s) to the folder containing your PowerPoint presentation before inserting any audio or video.
Then you can transfer this entire folder if you need to move or copy the presentation.
If your files are relatively small, it is also possible to increase the 100 KB default up to 5 MB in
PowerPoint->Tools->Options->General-> Link sounds with file size greater than ... kb

1. Insert a MP3 to PowerPoint
Usually, audio in WAV format will be inserted in PowerPoint and audio in MP3 will be linked to PowerPoint. Linked means that if you move your PowerPoint file, the audio will be lost.
There are two solutions for you.
A. put the music and the PowerPoint file in a same folder. Reinsert the MP3 to the file if you have onced inserted.

As the domain form of communication, E-mail messaging has long ago exceeded telephone traffic and become the most popular information delivery service.
When it comes to PowerPoint, you will always it troublesome. Audio or video may be lost. The sending may be failed. If you can learn some clever tips and tricks for your E-mail program, you will have more success of sending a PowerPoint via E-mail.

Of course, you may have umpteen ways to send a PowerPoint via E-mail, but it will be nice if you can find the easiest way. Here are some tips for you.

1. Send a PowerPoint with Audio via E-mail
Before we go on, we should learn something about how audio works in PowerPoint.

Usually, audio in WAV format will be embedded in PowerPoint while audio in MP3 or other file formats will be linked to PowerPoint. And more, sound files larger than 100 KB (i.e. anything but a short sound effect) will be linked to your presentation rather than embedded in it.

What is the difference between Linked and Embedded? Embedded means that when you move the PPT on your computer or e-mail it, audio will be moved together. When audio is linked, it will be lost if you move the PPT or e-mail it.

Then how to send a PowerPoint always with audio?
For wav audio which is greater than 100 KB, increase the 100 KB default up to 5 MB.
PowerPoint ->Tools -> Options->General (Link sound with file size greater than 5000 KB)

For other audio files
Copy the sound file and the PowerPoint presentation in a same folder (Short path is recommended) and then reinsert the sound file to PowerPoint. Send the whole folder via E-mail.

2. More Ways to Insert Audio to PowerPoint
The usually practice to insert audio to PowerPoint is
Insert sound to a slide :
PowerPoint -> Insert (Menu) -> Movies and sounds -> ...

Sometime you have one more option: Insert sound as slide transition
The audio will play as transition and will be embedded to the PowerPoint file. So when you move the presentation file, the music will not be lost.
PowerPoint -> Slide Show -> Slide Transition -> Modify Transition (Right Panel) -> Sound -> Other Sound

Both Mambo and Joomla are FREE CMS applications which offer full feature set and easy customization. These two sytems are quite similar yet they do have some differences.

History:
Mambo is the older of two - Joomla is actually a fork of Mambo and is thoroughly based on it. Somewhere at the end of 2005 Mambo developers' chose to separate from the core Mambo team and founded a new CMS application called Joomla! /djuumla/. Since then, both tools started separate evolution, though there aren't any major differences between them yet.

Mambo CMS is a great tool that offers excellent options when it comes to content management. There are also a long list of add-on components and modules, which you may add to it and enhance its capabilities (e.g. forum, shopping cart, gallery, etc).

How to convert PowerPoint to flash Using Free Tools

It would be exciting if you could convert a PowerPoint presentation to flash in a completely free way. With a lot of net searching and tutorial reading, I was able to do it with some Open Source Tools. You can read this step-by-step tutorial to learn the details.

Step 1
I launch Open Office in headless mode with a Mac. Then I open an Xterm and do the following

$ cd /Applications/OpenOffice.org 2.0.app/Contents/MacOS/program/
$ ./soffice -headless -accept="socket,port=8100;urp;"

Step 2
Download JOOConverter from

JOOConverter is an Open Source Java/OpenOffice Document converter to perform conversions between different office document formats.

I use a Java Library JOOConverter to convert my PowerPoint to flash by running

$ java -jar jooconverter.jar powerpoint.ppt flash.swf

The converted flash does not look pretty good with some strange artifacts in it. But it does play with a flash player although no other SWF tool is able to handle or even to read this flash file by Open Office. So I decided to find a tool to tidy up the flash file.

Step 3
Download Transform SWF from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/transform-swf
The Transform SWF framework is the tool to parse and encode Flash (.swf) files.

I finally managed to find Transform SWF to rewrite the flash file. I Load it into Transform’s internal swf model and then write it out again. With some nasty hacking of the Transform source, I was able to swallow exceptions caused by the out-of-bounds pointers in the swf file generated by swallow exceptions. And once again, it worked.

I think it would be troublesome to convert a PowerPoint to flash in this way if you do not have some programming experience. For the practical things, you may try some commercial converters in the market like Wondershare PPT2Flash Standard and PPT2Flash Professional

Communication technologies generally falls into two categories - asynchronous or synchronous.
Asynchronous activities use technologies such as blogs, wikis, and discussion boards. Synchronous activities occur with all participants joining in at once, as with a chat session or a virtual classroom or meeting.

The term E-Learning 2.0 has been foucsing on the uses of social software such as blogs and wikis. This approach has been particularly evangelised by some instrcuctional designers.

The writing community and the communication channels relate with the E-learning and the M-learning communities. Both the communities provide a general overview of the basic learning models and the activities required for the participants to join the learning sessions across the virtual classroom. The activities essential for the learners require frequent chat sessions in the form of virtual classrooms and blog meetings.

The various blogs that are being used for providing writing approaches are gaining popularity. The Encyclopedic content is no longer in demand and the virtual classrooms serve the purpose of an instructor leading and controlling the sessions.

Theoretically speaking , E-Learning 2.0 stands for the second phase of E-learning based on Web 2.0 and the emerging trends in eLearning.

Acutually, the connotative meangings of E-learning fall in key functions.

1. Students create content, collaborate with peers through mechanisms such as blogs, Wikis, threaded discussions, RSS and others to form a learning network with distributed content creation and distribution of responsibilities.

2. It takes advantage of many sources of content aggregated together into learning experiences.

3. It utilizes various tools including online references, courseware, knowledge management, collaboration and search.

The traditional model of eLearning is that publishers created, organized and structured the content into coursesand to be consumed by students. This out-of -date learning modle has been turned on its head. Content now is used rather than read. In most cases, it is reproduced by students instead of producer. When it comes to structure, it is more likely to resemble a language or a conversation rather than a book or a manual.
Therefore, the e-learning application begins to look very much like a blogging tool. It represents one node in a web of content, connected to other nodes and content creation services used by other students.

New International Academic Event

How to Play 4:3 PPT on 16:9 Screens without Distortion

As the 16:9 HDTVs and LCD monitors become more and more popular in our life, how to play the 4:3 PPT presentations in full screen mode on these new babies without distortion is a big problem to many people. It seems impossible to make it on the face, but how about if we try to add something to fill the blank part of the screen. Please follow me, I’ll show you step by step.

Assume we have a 16:9 wide screen like the rectangular (the gray and the white) below.

The white part is the original presentation, and the gray part is the blank part of the screen. Be sure, if we display a presentation on a HDTV it won’t be showed like this, but two black (or gray) bars on the left and right sides of the screen. Here, we just consider the layout. What we should do now is to add something to replace the gray part. Until I use some PPT to flash conversion tools, I have no idea what is appropriate for the little gray.

Articulate Presentater, Wondershare PPT2Flash Professional, and Pointecast Publisher are powerful tools to convert PPT presentations to flash-based ones. Here, take PPT2Flash Professional for example to show how to use this kind of tools to solve our problem.

Firstly, after installed PPT2Flash Professional (the version I installed is 3.5.0), open the presentation in PowerPoint, we can find PPT2Flash on the menu bar, click the cascade menu, choose Player Templates, in Player we could see the player’s frame. In the full style mode, there is a panel at the left of our slide. It is exactly what we need. With this panel a 4:3 presentation becomes a 16:9 presentation (maybe not a perfect 16:9 proportion, but much better).

Then, let’s have a look at what we have on this panel, Company logo; Author Info, which includes E-mail, Bio, Name, Photo; Toolbar, including Flash Title, Attachments, Notes; Control Bar. Users can manually set which items should be displayed. After personalized the player template, and published the presentation, we get a flash presentation with 16:9 aspect ratio.

Now we can play the presentation on 16:9 wide screens by setting the aspect-ratio control to Stretch or Full.

Many people may understand the value of a good presentation for knowledge delivery, but only few of them do know how to make such one. Luckily, in most conditions, those programs are universal for familiar content, for instance, a program demonstrate the phenomenon beats. The basic parameters would be possibly changed are frequency, amplitude, and phase difference. A program satisfying this is suitable for any class about beats. And, this kind of demos are available on Internet by searching ‘** demonstration’. Since it’s easy to get one, why bother to make one.

Then, flash. Flash is capable to manage most functions .exe programs can. Besides, flash is easier to please audience by visual animation looking than the .exe programs, and it is more acceptable in programming skill. Thus, the flash demo is becoming more and more popular. Just like exe programs, flash demos can be downloaded from the web, but only one element would never get an appropriate one from the Internet. That is quiz. This must be distinct from different individuals. Even in the same course, teachers would like to have their own quiz. Now the problem becomes simple, build a flash quiz to enhance the interaction of presentations.

Moodle stands for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment. This is an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity In the technical terms, Moodle is Open Source LMS. It is a FREE learning management system that enables learning professionals (teachers) to create engaging online learning courses.

1) Social constructionist pedagogy
